As a prep player Coach Shumate received defensive player-of-the-year honors in the all-Northeast Division in 2007 at Las Vegas High School. He was rated No. 47 as an inside linebacker by Scouts, Inc., and the seventh-best recruit in the state of Nevada byScout.com. He was awarded three stars and ranked 34th nationally as an inside linebacker on Rivals.com website. Was a three-time first-team all-state pick.  First-team all-Sunrise Region and all-Northeast Division in 2005-07. Was named to the Nevada All-Decade team by Rivals.com. Coach Shumate was a hard-hitting player who had over 10 sacks and 200 tackles in his final two campaigns … Recorded 94 tackles, eight sacks and six forced fumbles in 2006, when he was the first junior team captain in school history. His team won the state 4A championship in 2005 and 2006, going a combined 26-3. He chose San Diego State over Boise State, Arizona State, and Air Force Academy among other offers. His college career was cut short after his sophomore season when he became medically disqualified after several knee surgeries. He continued to work with the team and the strength and conditioning staff through 2011.
