My Football Mentor would like to introduce former NFL All Pro defensive lineman Keith Millard as the newest coach to the MFM staff. My Football Mentor Co-Founder Eric Van Tassel and Keith have a friendship as well as collegiate and professional coaching history together that started in 1996.
Coach Millard has spent the last eleven years coaching in the NFL as a defensive line coach and pass rush specialist for the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Tennessee Titans. Currently, Keith is taking time off from the NFL to work on his personal coaching business and shoot training videos with My Football Mentor.
Coach Millard’s resume as a player is vast. He was born in Pleasanton, CA and was a linebacker at Foothill High School in the same city. He attended Washington State University where he was voted First Team All-Pac 10 as a senior and won the Morris Trophy as the Pac-10’s top defensive lineman.
Coach Millard was a first round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 1984, the 13th overall pick. He was also drafted by the Arizona Wranglers of the United States Football League in 1984. He was traded and played one season with the Jacksonville Bulls in 1985. Coach Millard ended up ranked second in the USFL with 12 sacks and was voted to the All-USFL team.
Coach Millard joined the Vikings in 1985 as a rookie and burst onto the scene by leading the team with 11 sacks as a defensive end. In 1986 he had another stellar year with 10.5 sacks.
In 1989 Coach Millard moved to defensive tackle and set (what is still the current) NFL record for sacks by an interior lineman at 18. He went to his second consecutive Pro Bowl that year and was named to his third consecutive All-Pro honor. In 2010 Coach Millard was voted 21st on the list of the Top 50 All-Time Minnesota Vikings as a part of the team’s 50th anniversary.
Warren Sapp (NFL Hall of Famer)- “Keith Millard is one of only two coaches (Rod Marinelli of the Bears being the other) who has the knowledge and skill, in addition to the temperament, to coach, teach and prepare the defensive lineman of today’s NFL landscape. Those looking for a teacher as well as a fellow hunter to attack offenses should just take a look and I guarantee you will love what you see! It was a pleasure to work with Keith for three years in Oakland!”
Michael Benett (Seattle Seahawks)- “Not many coaches believed in me. Actually, most gave up on me except for one. I owe a lot of my success to Keith Millard! He took me under his wing and took me from being just a guy into “the guy” I have become. The vision he had for me was bigger than I could see myself. He was so detailed on the steps I needed to take. Every day he kept me before and after practice to work on my game. Coach Millard knows what he’s talking about! He was an All-Pro! I am excited to work with him again during this off-season, to take my game up another level!”
Patt Hill (Head Coach Fresno State)- “Very rarely do you have a person who has played at the highest level and can also teach it! Keith Millard has the ability to reach young players, to motivate them and to get them to execute!”
Pat Jones (Oklahoma State University)- “Keith is a “big time defensive line coach” in all the phases! Without a doubt, he is one of the best, if not the best, pass rush expert at any level! He is a great teacher and motivator. Any player or coach would be well served to spend quality time with Keith!”
Ron Lynn (Stanford Director of Player Development)- “Everyone who is interested in defensive line play can learn from Keith Millard. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Pop Warner coach or an NFL coach, you will learn from Coach Millard. As a former NFL Defensive MVP and an NFL coach, Keith has a great perspective on what to teach at all levels and, more importantly, how and why to teach it! We have adopted a lot of techniques after discussions with Coach Keith Millard!”
Coach Millard will be shooting an extensive training video series for defensive lineman with My Football Mentor that will be available in the near future. He is currently available for one to one and group training via his website at www.coachmillard.com. You can contact him through his website or by email at: email@example.com
