Cover 1 is a single safety coverage. This coverage is most easily identified because there will be a single safety up top, and the corners will be manned up against the receivers. Cover 3 can look like Cover 3, so you’re going to want to pay close attention to where the corners are looking. If their eyes are locked onto the receiver’s hips, they’re playing man coverage and you’ve got a Cover 1 defense. Unlike cover 3, where the safety splits the field in thirds with the corners, here the safety’s responsibility is to help any defensive back that gets beat deep.
