What are some of your goals for 2016? As a player or coach going into off-season I’d suggest that you create meaningful goals that are worth fighting for because life (and your opponents!) will constantly test your resolve and level of commitment.
If your team goals, or individual ambitions don’t get your heart racing, blood pumping, butterflies circling, or voice crackling when you talk about them, you may need to go back to drawing board and create some new ones.
Why? Because it’s easy to create safe and socially acceptable goals that get a polite pat on the back or an attaboy. Those types of goals last about as long as a New Years hangover. Run-of-the-mill goals don’t inspire us.
But the meaningful goals are an entirely different animal. They will survive weeks and months of pursuit, and they will continue hunting despite challenges and set-backs. When you have deep meaningful goals you take set-backs and criticism in stride rather than sitting down and feeling sorry for yourself. Most critics (including your own self-talk) come from misguided people (or thinking) who will try to convince you that you’re not good enough. One of you will be right.
We live in a culture that values perfection, and failure is often viewed as a sign of weakness. The problem with this mindset is that people become so fixated on ‘not failing’ that they never move forward! Sound familiar?
Athletes and teams who have no goals or vision for 2016 will be like a still stagnant pond. The only thing growing will be green algae and a foul order. It’s easy to go through the motions of preparing for a new season but also realize that ‘towing the company line’ has a price to pay also… regret, boredom, and un-inspired performance.
However, most people want to be inspired, they want to be a part of something bigger, better, and more meaningful than the status quo. Courageous coaches and inspired athletes take ACTION toward their goals. And even though they will fail many times they will also experience the thrill of pursuit, fulfillment, and a vibrancy that life was meant to deliver.
Be inspiring in 2016!
