Athletic Trainer Groel

Prior to discovering her love for Athletic Training, Liana was a competitive athlete; participating in competitive swimming for US Swimming.   She competed in swimming and water polo during her high school career.  In addition to aquatic sports, she participated in dance (ballet) for 13 years.  Liana decided to pursue Athletic Training when her athletic career was cut-short due to overuse injuries.  “I became an Athletic Trainer because I wanted high school athletes to have the opportunity for a long and healthy athletic career, through the education of injury prevention and management.”

Liana received her Bachelor’s in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training from California State University, Northridge.  She continued her education at California University of Pennsylvania earning her Master’s in Sport’s Psychology.  Liana is a Certified Athletic Trainer and is an active member of the professional organizations, NATA (National Athletic Trainers’ Association), FWATA (Far-West Athletic Trainers’ Association), CATA (California Athletic Trainers’ Association), and SDHSATA (San Diego High Schools Athletic Trainers’ Association).

Her experience is diverse including various athletic levels such as, University (CSUN), Community College (Moorpark & Valley), High School (El Camino, Ka’u & Beverly Hills), Middle School (Chaminade), and Physical Therapy Clinics (Body Awareness, Gateway & Synergy).  “After working at Beverly Hills High School, I knew that level of athletics was where I wanted to plant my roots.  High school athletes are at the point in their lives where they are developing a higher level of body awareness and knowledge of their skills and abilities.  Through proper strength, conditioning, and prevention techniques; injuries can be minimized now and later.”

Liana currently works at El Camino High School in Oceanside, California.  She specializes in orthopedic rehabilitation focusing on the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, and tendons).  “When developing a rehabilitation program for an athlete, I must take into account the entire kinetic chain, not just the injury because everything in the human body is connected.”  Maintaining an emphasis on a functional protocol for an unrestricted return to play can include:

  • Neuromuscular reeducation
  • Soft tissue mobilization
  • Biofeedback & specific muscle reeducation
  • Plyometric & agility training
  • Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)
  • Biomechanical and postural reeducation
  • Core (abdominal, back, hip, gluteal muscles) & dynamic stabilization, incorporating Pilates training which utilizes a balance between strength and flexibility in order to elongate and tone the muscles.

In addition to working full-time at El Camino for all sports offered, she joined Oceanside Pop Warner in 2011.  She has also been involved with amateur mixed martial arts and beach soccer organizations.
